Eye ulcers in pets, also known as corneal ulcers or Red eye, are open sores or scratches on the
cornea, —the clear, outer surface of the eye. Eye ulcers in pets, also known as corneal ulcers,
are open sores or scratches on the cornea—the clear, outer surface of the eye. They are a
common and potentially serious eye problem in dogs and cats that require prompt veterinary
care.
Causes of Eye Ulcers in Pets:
– Trauma or injury (such as scratches from branches, other animals, or rough play)
– Foreign bodies in the eye
– Eye infections (bacterial, viral, or fungal)
– Dry eye or inadequate tear production
– Structural abnormalities of the eyelids or eyelid tumors
– Underlying diseases like glaucoma or keratoconjunctivitis sicca
Signs of Eye Ulcers:
– Excessive tearing or discharge
– Squinting or blinking more than usual
– Redness and inflammation
– Cloudiness or opacity on the cornea
– Sensitivity to light
– Pawing or rubbing at the eye

Diagnosis:
– Veterinary examination with a slit lamp or specialized equipment
– Fluorescein stain test to highlight corneal ulcers
– Additional tests if underlying causes are suspected
Treatment:
– Fluorescein stain application to confirm the ulcer
– Topical antibiotics to prevent or treat infection
– Pain relief medications
– Protective measures like an Elizabethan collar to prevent rubbing
– Surgical intervention in severe cases, such as corneal suturing or tissue grafts
– Addressing underlying causes like eyelid abnormalities or dry eye
Prevention:
– Regular eye checks and prompt treatment of minor injuries
– Avoiding exposure to irritants or foreign objects
– Managing underlying health issues that compromise eye health

Important:Eye ulcers can worsen quickly and cause permanent vision loss if not treated
promptly. If your pet shows signs of an eye ulcer, seek veterinary care immediately.
